So what do you buy in the sales? The simple answer is nothing; unless you need it.

Which is why I'm going to buy a Reiss leather belt, as my current black one is threatening to snap in two on its next wear.

The trouble with sales is that the merchandise usually reduced is the stuff no one else bought so don't be fooled into buying something thinking it's a bargain. It will only be a bargain left where it is! By all means buy something you've coveted and longed for all season if you can afford it in one single transaction.

I've got my eye on a Joseph camel coat, see outfit builder above, but even though it's reduced by over £300 it's still a small fortune. Also don't get too excited by sales online until you've got your size secured in your basket. I scrolled through a whole range of workout tops before finding 'the one' only to discover my size was out of stock!

Sale shopping can be frustrating, which is why most of us shy away from them. Or do the exact opposite, bordering on a supermarket sweep style of bargain hunting as if there'll never be a retail bonanza ever again! This is when I say stick to leather, wool, cashmere and silk. These luxury products will always have the highest original price points so if you see them on sale do consider them when they're more affordable.

My favourite high end label Iris & Ink have some good offers and if a designer bag is on your hit list look at The Outnet too. Those that read my posts regularly will know I'm a fan of Anya Hindmarch which is why I've chosen her tongue in cheek, all over stickers, bag for todays outfit builder.

Sale time is also when the savvy, organised, shopper cashes in with her sale alerts popping up all over the place, for things she's hankered for over the past season; or when valued customers get the sale preview invites, to snare the best on offer before anyone else.

This year I'm also going to snap up some non fashion sale items, a new set of fairy lights and am even considering a fake Christmas tree, left, something I never thought I'd do, but I have The White Company to thank for that. Let's just hope they've got my size still in stock, 7ft if you're asking!
