Today a new law will come into effect where larger UK stores will have to charge customers 5p for plastic bags. So don't get caught out at the checkout and have a reusable bag to hand at all times. If you don't want to reuse a plastic carrier then look at Alphabet Bags great range of canvas bags from £13, above, for a stylish alternative.

If you prefer a sturdier shopper then head to Seasalt who have a lovely range of affordable printed jute bags starting from £4. I love their new jaunty Captain Penguin cute jute!

If you want something more whimsical then Paperchase and Cath Kidston offer these delightful fold away bags that you can whip out before having to pay the 5p levy. If none of these tempt you into saying goodbye to plastic bags for good then bear this fact in mind. In 2014 7.6 billion bags were handed out and will take 500 years to decay in a landfill!

If that isn't a good enough incentive to buy a bag you can use over and over again then I don't know what is!
