Don't buy new...buy new to you!

Hope you've had a good Summer and are gearing up for back to school this week or have already started the Autumn term like mine have! So back to blogging and first on the agenda was to sign up for Oxfams  'Second hand September' campaign and pledge to say no to new for 30 days.

Since starting 'mumsweardaily' I've actually purchased less clothing and accessories; choosing instead to really consider any purchases and use my tried and tested method of asking these three questions before each transaction.
1) Do I really need it? (or does it do the same job as something I already own)
2) Does it replace something that I have worn a lot and is now a casualty of wear and tear?
3) Can I visualise it used in 3 different outfits?

If I answer yes to the above and it's affordable then I tend to buy. I also believe that if you think about an item long after you've walked away from the till point it's often the case that it's a keeper; almost love at first sight, and you should buy things you love, that will make you feel great! So next time you're tempted wait a week or two and see if it's still on your mind.

The other tip to not buying is trying. Taking an item into the changing room sorts the sheep from the goats as it proves you've got the time and energy for it; also whilst it may look great on the hanger it may be a different story when you try it on! Its saves you money in the long run as most of the items that come into our preloved consignment store, Willow & Eve, with tags on have never been worn and stay in the wardrobe forgotten about until way past the returns date.

If you buy and don't wear something within the first week or don't have a specific occasion or outfit in mind then keep it out of the wardrobe, where you can see it, until you do wear it. Otherwise take it back asap. Set a reminder on your phone 3 days before the returns policy runs out so you stand a chance of getting a full refund.

If you do need a fashion fix or an AW update consider buying preloved or second hand. I didn't realise Oxfam has an online store, which makes it a lot easier to shop category and sizes and consignment stores ( or dress agencies ) gives you a percentage of the sale of your nearly new clothes, which is a win win scenario. Our consignment store, Willow & Eve, offers a boutique feel with quality brands at affordable prices. The feedback has been so positive and shows that consumers are rejecting the high streets fast fashion offer in favour of more sustainable options.

So the gauntlet has been thrown and I'm going to resist buying new for this month. I hope you feel inspired to do the same. Visit Oxfam for more details on the impact the fashion industry is having on our planet and the carbon footprint of buying new. As I've said before 'don't feast on fast fashion, savour slow style instead!' Of course I still may be tempted by a preloved garment in our shop.....so don't buy new buy new to you!.

Summer style staples in the Massimo Dutti sale

If you're familiar with my blog you'll already know that Massimo Dutti is becoming my favourite go to brand. I have to admit that sizing is sometimes an issue, especially as I order online, and I've had to return a few items. However the grown up sister brand of Zara often offers staples for a modern day wardrobe as well as statement pieces that aren't too fashion forward as to be deemed unsuitable after one season.

Currently on sale are my picks below; I actually own the skirt, see above, as I bought it full price and it's been useful in the hotter weather, worn with a linen tank top or popover shirt, similar to the styling shown.

Here I'm wearing it with an All Saints t-shirt, Coccinelle leather round cross body bag and Matt Bernson KM gladiator sandals, all old. As I already have tan leather sandals I don't need another pair  but if I needed to replace them these slim strap ones would be ideal.

I love the colour combination of this tie dye abstract print shirt and wanted to get the dress, see left, but it's already sold out, so the shirt will give interest to classic separates instead. You also can't beat a neutral coloured shirt and this one in lyocell will look great teamed with paper bag or tailored shorts for a cool but considered office look.

I'm tempted by some of their new collection but as I'm trying to purchase less and buy more thoughtfully I'll refrain for now. Click on the links to shop and thanks for stopping by.

Magic dog bowls from Magisso!

On my recent visit to Singapore I ventured into Crate & Barrel, to look at home decor for the family apartment, when I came across these great pet products; slow feeding and cool water bowls. When I arrived back home I tried to purchase them from Crate & Barrel but unfortunately they don't export these items. However you can buy them much closer to home as they stock the Magisso 'Happy Pet Project' at Ocado, Fetch and Amazon.

Magisso is a Finish company, based in Helsinki, and since the founders Juhani and Anssi set it up in 2008 Magisso has won numerous design awards, all this without either of them having design or international business experience. That's inspiration in itself!

The pet bowls are great in this hot spell, and both food and water bowls keep cool after a quick soak in cold water. The inspired slow feeding bowl has a bone design (they also do heart and fish shapes if you prefer) in the centre so your pooch can pace themselves when grubs up!

Check out their other products too, helping to solve everyday problems and making life that little bit easier. I love the cake server...perfect portions every time, and the 'Element No 1' stable table, without the need for any DIY expertise! See below.

I get so excited when I stumble upon great and considered design companies, and I'm happy to share my finds, especially when it can help your pets stay safe in this weather. Here is our miniature Labradoodle, Cole, waiting pool side, having had his walk before 7am this morning and now splayed out in the shade.

Have fun in the sun today, keep yourself and pets cool; click on the links to shop or for more information and thanks for stopping by.
