Yes I know we've only just got to March but on the 20th of this month we see in Spring. Then before you know it the Summer 'social season' has kicked in and maybe a wedding invite will drop on your door mat. One things for certain Summer occasion dressing can stress out even the most stylish event goer.

This is where a bit of pre-planning comes in. So now, yes NOW, is the time to start searching, trying on and even buying that occasion outfit. First consider your options. Weigh up how many events you will be attending and whether the same outfit can be worn twice or more. For instance if you are a wedding guest to a good friend's nuptials and the same circle of friends are going to Ascot then maybe you should opt for 2 outfits.

Then think about the footwear required. I always work from the shoes up. Is it likely to be grass, shingle or cobbles? Then please be sensible and go for a wedge, block or equivalent heel with a larger surface area than a stiletto! Also what transport are you taking and how close can you actually get to the action without a 2 mile hike? At Goodwood last year there were a lot of ladies wielding their heels to stride barefoot across the fields used as an overspill car park!

Are you likely to wear hose? If you need leg coverage but have open toe sandals then look for the nude, sandal toe tights from Pretty Polly or even an open toe tight from Autograph at M&S. (yes such tights exist!)

Will you don a hat? Check on event websites for dress code, bearing in mind that there has been a clamp down of late on attire at Royal Ascot and look at the long range weather forecast for the week. Do you need a wind resistant updo or a birdcage umbrella, like this one from Lulu Guinness, so you can keep out the rain and still view the favourites?

The hardest part is deciding on outerwear. I always plump for a structured trench coat like this water repellent one from Zara or what about a pastel trench like this lovely lilac one from Ted Baker. You can always shoulder robe it if necessary!

This season the easy part is finding a dress. Here are six of my favourites from the new SS collections so far. So rise to the occasion and you'll be first past the finish post come Summer!
