Classics for now

Today I realised I'm wearing a combination of classic wardrobe staples. The cotton white shirt, dark blue denim jeans, black ballet flats, a beige trench coat and a natural pink nail polish. Not earth shattering I know but these versatile pieces can be worn in any number of looks and never seem to date.

My outfit is a mixture of old and nearly new items, M&S Autograph white shirt (old), MiH dark denim jeans (old from TK Maxx), Massimo Dutti combination pumps (last year), Mango flowy trench coat (this year) and Mavala Rose shell nail polish. To show the staying power of these pieces I've created two outfit builders from both the high street and high end that are available now.

Above is the high street outfit builder with classics totaling £357.73 and below the high end designer version which will set you back £2,669 which is over a £2,000 difference! Whichever you prefer or can afford it's definitely money well spent!

Spring into Autumn

When I saw this mustard coat and messenger bag in store at Zara they reminded me of an outfit Olivia Palermo, above, wore to the AW Chloe show back in March. Whilst her coat is from Valentino and the 'Drew' bag is Chloe it shows how quickly the trends now filter down through to the high street.

It also shows that most of your Spring outfits are still appropriate to wear in Autumn making any new purchases this season more likely to get a higher cost per wear return. So I've taken Olivia's spring ensemble and used it as inspiration for todays outfit builder below.

I would wear the Zara maroon high neck sweater underneath the Mango blouson for a more seventies layering look and a pale wash girlfriend jean is fresher for AW. The girlfriend jean fit is a looser, slim fit jean which sits higher on the waist making it more flattering than your favourite baggier boyfriend jean.

Olivia's £600 Aquazzura booties are available in moss green at NET-A-PORTER but I've opted for a John Lewis grey suede shoe boot for a more affordable and practical footwear option. Then to be as groomed as Olivia finish with a coat of classic red nail polish like this 'Pop Art' nail laquer from YSL.

If you like this 'Spring into Autumn' outfit then shop the look by clicking on the descriptive text underneath or kindly share with friends and family.

Sneakers to wear now

Last night was a Supermoon and having watched the news yesterday my son expressed more than a mild interest in this celestial phenomenon. So what did I do? Set my alarm for 4 am and gently wake him up to watch this natural magical show together? No, I forgot all about it and slept right through.

I felt the pangs of guilt this morning and have now promised him we'll watch it together next time it happens, which will be in 2033, when he'll be the grand old age of 26! The worst of it was that the Telegraph had videos of the lunar eclipse from around the world and UK with one of the best being from none other than our home town of Worthing! I'd better set the alert now.

Anyway on to todays outfit and it's that time of year again when you've packed your sandals away but feel it's too sunny for a heavier boot. So the question is what footwear to plump for? If your working wardrobe requires a more formal approach you'd go for a classic court pump or ballet flat. If you opt for a more casual, practical shoe you'll probably choose a trainer.

Wasn't long ago that a pair of battered Converse were the go to option but now there's a lot more acceptable, casual footwear to choose from. The current fashionistas favourite are the distressed look sneaker from Golden Goose deluxe brand, which derive from Italy.

Find these Super Star distressed white leather pair, left, at NET-A-PORTER.com. If you want a more affordable white leather sneaker I've chosen a Massimo Dutti pair for my outfit builder below, which you can distress at your leisure, but for now I'm sticking to my original Mi Stan Smiths that I'm wearing above.
